A 23-year-old Elkhart man is under arrest for fleeing the scene of a fatal accident Saturday. Police say he struck a moped with his car on County Road Four. In the collision, both the driver and a passenger were thrown from the moped and dragged down the road before the driver ultimately fled the scene.
The moped driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to Elkhart General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police later located the vehicle driver, who was charged with leaving the scene of a deadly crash. The incident remains under investigation.
Leaving the scene of an accident in Indiana is a serious criminal offense, and the consequences increase significantly when a crash results in a fatality. After a crash, state law requires drivers to stop, provide contact and insurance information, and render aid if possible. Failing to do so in a fatal accident is considered a felony, which can carry up to 16 years imprisonment and substantial fines. Indiana courts view fleeing the scene of an accident especially offensive for denying victims timely medical attention and obstructing the accident investigation.
