The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a driver who caused a head-on collision and fled the scene in Elkhart County early Thursday morning. Police said the crash occurred on County Road 40 west of County Road 21 outside the Goshen city limits.

Officials said the driver, of a small SUV, crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head-on, and then ran from the scene. The driver and passenger in the other vehicle were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

In Indiana, leaving the scene of an accident is considered a criminal offense, whether or not it involves property damage, injury, or death. After an accident, drivers are legally required to stop, provide their information, and offer aid if anyone is injured.

Penalties for fleeing the scene of an accident range from a misdemeanor charge for property damage to felonies for injuries or death, with potential prison time, fines, and license suspension. Charges increase in severity if drugs or alcohol are involved.

If you are the victim of a hit and run, call 911 immediately and report the accident and any injuries. Try to note details about the fleeing vehicle and license plate. Take photos of the damage and scene, talk to any witnesses, and report the accident to your insurance provider. Be sure to seek medical attention as soon as possible, even if you believe your injuries are minor.

Even if the driver is not found, you may still be able to recover damages through your own uninsured motorist coverage or legal action. If you are involved in an accident with a hit-and-run driver, you should consult an experienced Elkhart car accident lawyer to discuss your legal options.

Eric is definitely well experienced in handling these matters. Thanks to his help and guidance, we were able to have all of our necessary steps done before going to court that helped to retain driving privileges. The judge even remarked at how well the case had been managed during the hearing. With Eric’s help, I was able to obtain specialized driving privileges very promptly.
